Fortnite is one of the few games that makes New Year’s Eve special.

A game like Fortnite isn’t going to be around forever. It’s not like Zelda: A Link to the Past, or Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Because it’s a service and not an experience, it’s not something that can survive. Once the day Epic Games goes out of business or even less likely, stops supporting Fortnite as a game, there will be no way to ever play the game again.

So when it comes to the everyday gamer, most of them collect physical copies of the game to avoid this problem. But a game like Fortnite can’t be preserved,  only remembered. So it’s important that it offers up unique experiences that other games can’t match.

One such experience is ringing in the new year by eliminating people in Fortnite. Fortnite allowed players on New Year’s Eve to play the game and ring in the new year every time the clock went 11:59 PM to 12:00 AM, turning the calendar from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1.

That means that 24 times throughout the day, you get to have a mini-party that everyone has to adhere to. Starting at midnight in Kiribati, which is 14 hours ahead of London, England, aka the Greenwich Mean Time (time zone at zero degrees of longitude), and going through midnight on the Howland and Baker Islands (12 hours behind London and the GMT), you get to ring in the new years with the folks playing Fortnite.

The Fortnite New Year’s Eve celebration is a unique offering for those who are staying in

If you’re staying in on New Year’s Eve, or don’t like celebrating the holiday, joining up with some friends to play some matches isn’t the worst way to spend the holiday, especially when they make it so festive.

Seeing the disco ball appear, and a countdown seen from every angle on the island, followed by a dance break, is so much fun and so unique from any other day you may play the game. It’s one of those moments that gamers will remember forever when Epic Games one day calls it quits.
