Rift Encounters are a unique addition to Fortnite.

The folks at Fortnite have brought in a whole slew of new items and mechanics to the game since Chapter 4 started. From the Ex-Caliber rifle to the Shockwave Hammer and a host of other items, the game is radically different in Chapter 4, Season 1 than at any other point in the past.

Yet, one of the newest things that fans are getting accustomed to is the new Rift Encounters. Not sure if you’ve encountered one of these new events? Well, here’s what they are basically. Across the island, at various points, you’ll see a rift open up and items or characters appear from it. You’ll often see previously unseen characters in this chapter, or treasure chests laid out. Sometimes it’ll be other types of consumables or even cars.

You may even find a random present laying there, and not one given to you by the old bearded one himself. These items and events appear at random and it’s not clear, at least to me, when and where these things drop in at, so you’ll have to keep your eye out for things that look like they don’t typically belong there.

Rift Encounters fit well with the current storyline

The Rift Encounters make total sense from a storyline perspective. The entire island is made up of past and future versions of itself, and doing something like that would seemingly make things rather unbalanced. Causing such havoc across time would surely open the island up to unexpected consequences, like dealing with random loot drops.

It may not seem like a huge deal, but having the storyline continue through these Rift Encounters is a great idea. At the very least, players can see the consequences of having to build an island from spare parts across the timeline.
