Fortnite: What is the Fungus King Set?
By Andrew Lin
If you played during last month’s Winterfest event in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 and experienced server downtime, you may be eligible for compensation. Namely, a free harvesting tool in the Crescent Shroom Pickaxe. It’s part of the Fungus King Set, but no such set exists in the game. Not yet, at least.
Fortnite: What is the Fungus King Set?
You may have already met the Fungus King in your travels. It’s none other than Madcap, then purple and blue mushroom shaman who first appeared in Chapter 2 Season 8 as an NPC.
According to datamines and prerelease information, the Fungus King Set will contain three pieces: Madcap, the Crescent Shroom Pickaxe and the Bello Bag back bling.
The Madcap skin and back bling both have an extra glowing style, a reference to the bioluminescence some species of mushrooms exhibit. They’re both Epic rarity, so you can expect them to cost around 1,500 V-Bucks. It’s likely the back bling will come with the outfit.
He was one of the more fun NPCs to interact with in C2S8, with lots of absurd references to the mushroom people. My favorite line of dialogue happened when you bought Shield Mushrooms from Madcap. He would tell you not to “eat him”, which I always found hilarious since Madcap is more than willing to sell a member of his people for some gold.
Madcap has surprisingly had quite a long history in the game. The set ID was first discovered in datamines going all the way back to September 4, 2019 during Season X. He was then encrypted in C2S3 before showing his face in C2S8.
He’s gained quite the reputation among players since he was first leaked, and now it’s only a matter of time before the entire ensemble comes together.
It’s not known when Madcap will be released in the Item Shop; Epic Games has just officially announced that the set will come later.
