Epic Games has acquired Bandcamp and there are opportunities here.

Epic Games owns Fortnite and it’s been a hugely successful platform for the game company. So much so that they’ve built an empire off of its back. So it wasn’t that surprising to find out Fortnite’s parent company, Epic games, bought Bandcamp.

Bandcamp, for those unaware, was an independent streaming service that allowed musicians to sell their music. Unlike other streaming platforms, Bandcamp took less money from its selection of artists and was widely viewed positively despite its lower market share.

The news wasn’t universally celebrated, as most purchases by major companies like Epic Games of smaller independent brands are never really seen as good things.

That said, there is an opportunity here for players of Fornite.

Press Release via Fortnite News

"“In Epic, we’ve found a partner who believes as deeply as we do that the future of music, and art itself, depends on the creation of equitable and inclusive communities like the one our fans and artists have helped to build. We’re excited to work alongside the Epic team to accelerate the realization of our mission and pursue our shared goal of empowering more creators in a fair and open way.” – Ethan Diamond, CEO and co-founder of Bandcamp"

The addition of Bandcamp could be a good thing for all

The first thing that this purchase does is likely give Epic some sort of rights use of the music on its new platform. That means the music can be used in games like Fornite. Should that be the case fans may actually be able to stream music while playing different versions of Fortnite’s core games like Battle Royal, Team, and Impostors.

It also means that the musical acts on the service would be able to get massive exposure thanks to the enormous player base that the brands have.

It may not be ideal for those who have issues with major corporations, but if you’re looking just at the idea of expanding the appeal of lesser-known artists, this could be huge.
