Free Guy Fortnite collab is not worth it
By Andrew Lin
There are some properties that work better than others when it comes to crossovers in Fortnite. You would think that a movie like Free Guy would be a sure fire hit, but the Free Guy Fortnite collab is a pretty hard miss.
The movie doesn’t come out until tomorrow, so I don’t know if it’s any good. Basically, Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, an NPC in an open-world video game who becomes self aware. The Fortnite collab features a skin of Dude, not the eponymous Guy also played by Reynolds and a set of quests to complete for a free, but extremely awkward, emote.

You get Quests by visiting ATMs, as Guy is a bank teller in the film. A video of Reynolds as Guy will play, and he’ll give you the Quest. I was surprised that a recorded, live-action clip was played instead of just some dialogue text.
It would almost be cute, if the Quests weren’t so frustrating to complete. They’re focused on behaving like an NPC, like getting hit by cars or emoting near enemies. Most likely, you’ll get killed and have to re-queue. That means you’re going to find another ATM, take another Quest, and get game ended.
I’m not a fan of this game design decision. While the Quests are extremely thematic to the film’s premise, I can’t stand it when Quests revolve around things outside of your control or make you do things you actively want to avoid.
If the reward was substantial, I’d understand. But the reward is just a voice clip of Guy saying his apparent catchphrase from the movie. I just got ran over by a car, got hacked to death by a pickaxe and threw some of my money. I’m not having a good day, I’m having a bad day.
There are ways to cheese some of these Quests. You could drop a car on yourself with a ramp or get mauled by an Alien infested Wolf to count as some of these quests. You’re still jumping through a lot of hoops to get a dinky reward.
If we got a free Free Guy Skin, maybe as Guy himself, I’d be all over it. I love ironic humor, but as Reggie Fils-Aime says:
Perhaps at the end of this, I’ll be proven wrong and the ironic humor of the Free Guy Fortnite crossover will shine. But for now, I don’t think I get it.
