Fortnite Battle Royale: Explosives are no longer the go to, SMG’s being promoted

Epic Games has been dedicated to constantly changing and updating Fortnite Battle Royale in order to keep the majority of their fans happy. With the announcement made today in an article titled ‘Counterplay and Play Styles‘, we take a closer look at what the future of the game has to offer.

Gone are the days of finding one of the three llamas on the map and getting 30 rockets. Gone are the days of killing a few opponents and possibly picking up as many as 60 rockets. Sadly, the developers have felt the need to limit the number of rockets a player can hold and use in a match.

After the release of patch v4.4, Epic Games has made it a focal point to nerf the RPG’s and Grenade Launchers drastically while trying to buff the SMG’s.

It has become a big talking point around the community on both Reddit and Twitter as fans are not too happy with the changes coming to Fortnite. Many of them are understandable, like limiting the number of rockets a player can hold at 13.

Yes, it was fun to spam rockets at a players base late in the game, but getting pelted by explosive after explosive was incredibly frustrating and to be quite honest, unfair. To counteract (maybe) the nerfing of the rockets, it is much easier to find SMG’s and pick up ammunition.

Since the beginning of this week, I have noticed in multiple games that I have well over 200 light ammo but virtually nothing else. Why is this?

The SMG will never be used like shotguns so trying to make them more relevant is not really worth the developers time or the players time. In the article I referenced above, the creative minds behind the wildly popular Battle Royale game said that they are actively trying to create better counterplay to building.

Here is a quote from the article:

"“You should be able to find Victory Royales through multiple strategies. Shotguns should be strong, but other weapons have room to grow. Not every encounter should have to end in a build-off. We want to empower you to showcase your skill, strategy, and tactics in all variety of ways.”“We’ll be exploring these changes over the next few weeks – we’re excited to hear your thoughts and encourage you to participate in discussions on our various social channels.”"

While I like that Epic Games is catering to the general population, limiting the people who have learned how to build with speed and use it to their advantage will be incredibly disgruntled. What makes this game so unique is the building aspect and being able to use self-made cover in gunfights.

I think Fortnite will be popular for years to come. However, if Epic caters too heavily towards the casual players, the game will begin to die. The competitive scene will die out and some of the biggest content creators will move on and look for the next big thing.

Nerfing the explosive weapons this much is not a good thing for the game. At all. SMG’s are not the future and it is quite frustrating to see some of the changes coming to this great game.
