Netflix’s desire to expand gaming could affect Fortnite.

Netflix is expanding its video game offerings and that cou…I’m sorry? You didn’t know Netflix has a video games division? Welp, let’s start over. Netflix has free-to-play video games. The fact you’re only now finding out about this shows you how bad they’ve been about getting the word out and attracting players to their offerings.

It also shows you just how good, or not so good it appears, these games are.

And no, it’s not new. The streaming giant has been offering free-to-play games to its subscribers for over a year now. What’s stifling is its ability to get players to these games is the fact they’re largely created for mobile phone users. I know when I’m on my phone watching videos, what I really want to do is play GameBoy Advanced rejected video games.

That sounds like classic fun. Why would you play hacky games on your phone when everyone gets a Nintendo Switch at birth these days? Netflix, you silly goofs.

The problem is for Fortnite fans, we may be S.O.L. when it comes to how this affects Fortnite.

Netflix may be holding back original properties to bolster their gaming division

While there may be some holes in this theory, it’s beyond possible that Netflix and Fortnite’s parent company Epic Games may soon be done playing nice. Despite the brand’s top dog series, Stranger Things, having two seasons released between now and 2019, the folks over there haven’t allowed new characters or even the two older ones (Demogorgon and Chief Hopper) to appear in the game again.

Now, they allowed the releases of the Demogorgon and Hopper in 2019 when Stranger Things 3: The Game came out in the summer of 2019 but that was before the game ended up on Netflix’s service which was released in 2021.

Now the Stranger Things 3 game can be played only on that service unless you own a physical copy for another platform. If Netflix is trying to bolster its games division, it may no longer want to do partnerships with Fortnite’s parent company Epic, which have its own video game distribution service.
